Dear Second Grade Families,

These weeks are just flying by. It was just another great week in second grade! Here is what we did when we were in our room this week…

Language Arts - - This week our focus was on reading Greek Myths. We started the week reading about the 12 Olympian Gods. I think we all pretty much have them memorized with a picture aide.  We read Prometheus and Pandora, and Demeter and Persephone, Icarus and Daedalus, and Arachne the Weaver. This was a great tie in to our history unit Ancient Greece.  We again worked on writing complete sentences with our spelling words.  Spelling patterns for this week were ow, oo, ew, and ou.  These are some of the more difficult vowel teams. This was our last week of guided reading and spelling. At the end of the week we took a new end of year assessment to better help us put students in their MUR groups for next year.

Math - - This week was INTERIM WEEK! We took this same interim back the first week in school.  Scores on averaged ranged from 0% to about 25% correct the first week of school. We saw a MUCH different score this time.  I see growth every day in these kids, but it is also fun to see the data in black and white. J  You will see the results on their SLP when it comes home the last week of school.

Core Knowledge History – Trojan War, how Athens got its’ name, intro to democracy, and the Olympic games were just a few topics we covered this week in Ancient Greece.

Writing– This week finished up the How To pieces, next week we will begin Pigeon stories.

Be The Teacher – Our student teachers started this week and so far we have had some great teachings!  We have learned how to make a sock bunny, do some planting, and make ice cream sandwiches.  More wonderful lessons coming up next week! Our time is tight, so please make sure your second grader has their materials on their day.  I will try to send reminders home in the folders the night before.  Thanks!
